Why isn't a page appearing in AI answers?
Technical and content reasons why AI answers don't cite a page, and which checks in KI Score can help.
Last updated 23 days ago
If AI answers never list a particular page of your website as a source, the cause can be technical or content-related. This article covers the most common reasons and which KI-Readiness checks give you clues.
To see whether a page is cited at all, use Sources in KI Score:
- In the sidebar, open Sources in the Sichtbarkeit (Visibility) group.
- Switch to the Seiten (Pages) tab.
- Remove the preset Quellen (Sources) filter, Nur Drittquellen (third-party sources only), with the X next to it. It hides your own domain.
- Enter the page's address, or part of it, in the URL suchen… (Search URL) field.
This view only covers answers to your own monitoring prompts. If the page doesn't show up there, it wasn't cited in those answers during the selected time period.
Can the page be fetched?
AI systems can only cite what they can fetch and read. The page should respond quickly and without errors, and deliver its main content as server-rendered HTML. Content that is only built in the browser with JavaScript stays invisible to many AI fetches.
KI-Readiness checks this with “Website erreichbar” (Website reachable) for the homepage and with “Lesbares HTML” (Readable HTML) for the homepage and every checked page. The “Echte 404-Antworten” (Real 404 responses) check also shows whether nonexistent paths correctly return HTTP 404.
Are indexing and snippets allowed?
A page with noindex in its meta robots tag or X-Robots-Tag header tells search and AI systems not to include it. The nosnippet and max-snippet:0 directives prevent excerpts of the page from being used in answers.
KI-Readiness covers this with the checks “Indexierung erlaubt” (Indexing allowed) and “Snippet-Freigabe” (Snippets allowed). Both apply to the homepage and every checked page. To include the affected page, add it to the next analysis under Seitenauswahl (Page selection) → Eigene Auswahl (Custom selection). Its result then appears in the Geprüfte Seiten (Checked pages) section. Alternatively, check yourself whether one of these directives is set, for example in the template or your CMS.
Do you allow visibility crawlers?
Visibility crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, or Googlebot fetch content for search indexes and for live retrieval in AI answers. If your robots.txt blocks them, no AI answer can cite the page. Training crawlers such as GPTBot or CCBot, by contrast, only collect training data. KI Score never counts blocking them as an error.
On the KI-Crawler (AI crawlers) tab of KI-Readiness, you can see for each bot whether your robots.txt allows or blocks it. Use the filters above it to show, for example, only Sichtbarkeit (Visibility) or only Blockiert (Blocked). If a visibility crawler is blocked, Nächste Schritte (Next steps) lists the item “Sichtbarkeits-Crawler freigeben” (Allow visibility crawlers). KI Score evaluates the rules only for the website address you entered. Whether a Disallow rule blocks the directory the affected page sits in is something you need to check in your robots.txt yourself.
Note: KI Score doesn't detect blocks by a firewall, a CDN, or a web application firewall. If such systems block bots, you need to check their settings or logs yourself.
Is the content worth citing?
Even technically sound pages aren't cited automatically. AI answers tend to draw on pages that answer a specific question well: substantial text, a clear structure with subheadings, a recognizable date, and supporting evidence such as figures, source links, or quotes. Home pages are rarely cited.
KI-Readiness assesses this with checks such as “Zitierfähige Content-Seite” (Citable content page), “Frische-Signale im Content” (Freshness signals in content), and “Belege im Content” (Evidence in content). They only count as passed if every checked content page meets them. You can see which pages were checked and how each one did on the Inhalt & Struktur (Content & structure) tab, in the Geprüfte Seiten section.
Also check whether your prompts ask about the page's topic at all. A page on a niche topic can only appear in answers to questions that fit it.
What KI Score doesn't check for every page
- KI-Readiness checks the homepage and up to ten more pages, chosen automatically or set by you under Seitenauswahl. To check a specific URL, add it to that selection. Even then, KI Score evaluates the robots.txt rules only for the website address you entered.
- A positive KI-Readiness result doesn't apply to pages outside the selection.
- KI Score only shows whether a page is cited for answers to your own monitoring prompts.
- KI Score doesn't detect blocks by a firewall, CDN, or WAF.
Passing KI-Readiness is therefore no guarantee that a specific page will be cited.
