Understanding which sources AI cites

The Sources page shows which domains and pages AI answers cite and how that relates to mentions of your brand.

Last updated 11 days ago

When AI providers answer your prompts during monitoring, they usually return a list of sources. The Sources page brings these sources together for the selected website. This article explains how to read the table, how KI Score classifies sources, and how to filter and export the data.

Domains and pages

You'll find the page in the sidebar under Sichtbarkeit (Visibility) → Sources. It's based on the source lists of completed monitoring answers for this website. Links that appear only in the answer text don't count. If a Google web search returns only a redirect link as a source, KI Score stores the actual page.

Next to the page title, you pick the view:

  • Domains groups all cited addresses by domain. Subdomains get their own rows, so de.wikipedia.org is listed separately from en.wikipedia.org. KI Score drops a leading “www.”.
  • Seiten (Pages) lists every cited URL on its own. KI Score strips tracking parameters such as utm_source so the same page doesn't show up more than once.

Beside that, you can filter with Alle (All) and Social. Social shows only sources of the “Social” type.

Note: By default, the table shows all sources, including your own domains and the domains of your tracked competitors. To see only outside sources, choose + Filter → Quellen (Sources) → Nur Drittquellen (Third-party sources only). Remove the filter with its X to show these domains again.

The table shows 25 rows at first. Load more with Mehr laden (Load more). Clicking a row opens the source's details.

The columns in the sources table

Column What it means
# Rank in the current sort order.
Domain The cited domain. In the Seiten view, this shows the URL.
Verlauf (Trend) The weekly share of answers that cite the source over the last 8 calendar weeks. The trend doesn't depend on the selected time period. Weeks without answers stay a gap.
Typ (Type) A letter for the source type. Hover over it to see the name.
Zitationsrate (Citation rate) The share of all completed monitoring answers in the period that cite this source. By default, the table is sorted by this column in descending order.
Antworten (Answers) The number of answers in the period that cite this source.
Marke erwähnt % (Brand mentioned %) The share of those answers whose text mentions your brand, by brand name or alias.
Wettbewerber erwähnt % (Competitors mentioned %) The share of those answers that mention at least one tracked competitor.
URLs The number of distinct cited URLs on this domain. Always 1 in the Seiten view.

Marke erwähnt % and Wettbewerber erwähnt % refer to the answer text, not to the content of the source. They show the context in which a source gets cited. They don't tell you whether the source itself mentions your brand.

To change the sort order, click a column header. Verlauf and Typ can't be sorted. Use Spalten (Columns) to hide columns or change their order. #, Domain, and Zitationsrate always stay visible.

Tip: Sources with a high Zitationsrate where Wettbewerber erwähnt % is well above Marke erwähnt % come up often in answers that name your competitors more than your brand. These sources are worth a closer look.

Source types: how KI Score classifies domains

Every domain gets exactly one type:

Letter Type Assigned to
O Eigene Domain (Own domain) Your website's address (for a website on a subdomain, the main domain too) and other domains of your brand, including subdomains
C Wettbewerber-Domain (Competitor domain) The domain saved for a tracked competitor
W Wiki Well-known wiki platforms, for example wikipedia.org
S Social Well-known social networks, for example linkedin.com, youtube.com, or reddit.com
R Review-Portal (Review site) Well-known review platforms, for example trustpilot.com or kununu.com
D Verzeichnis (Directory) Well-known business and vendor directories, for example gelbeseiten.de
N News Well-known news sites, for example heise.de or spiegel.de
T Drittquelle (Third-party source) All other domains

KI Score first checks whether the domain belongs to your website, then whether it belongs to a tracked competitor. Only after that do fixed lists of well-known platforms apply. The classification follows these rules and can't be changed manually. The Nur Drittquellen filter hides rows of type O and C.

Note: KI Score recalculates types, brand mentions, and competitor mentions every time the page loads. If you add a domain to a competitor or change your brand, aliases, or competitors, the values change for older answers too.

Time period, filters, search, and export

Above the table, under Zeitraum (Time period), choose a preset such as Letzte 7 Tage, Letzte 14 Tage, Letzte 30 Tage (last 7, 14, or 30 days; 30 days is the default), or Gesamter Zeitraum (All time), or mark your own range in the calendar. Click Übernehmen (Apply) to use your selection. The period applies to every column except Verlauf. Use + Filter to narrow down the underlying answers further, for example by model, prompt, topic, tags, or Nennt Marke (Mentions brand).

Depending on the view, the search field reads Domain suchen… (Search domain) or URL suchen… (Search URL) and filters the rows by the text you enter.

To export the table:

  1. Set the view, filters, time period, and columns the way you want them.
  2. If needed, load more rows with Mehr laden.
  3. Click the download icon at the top right next to Spalten. Screen readers announce it as “Quellen exportieren” (Export sources).

KI Score saves the file as sources-YYYY-MM-DD.csv. It contains only the loaded rows and the visible columns.
