llms.txt: a guide with limited implications
Ferdinand Hofmann
An audit says “llms.txt missing”. Should the website team fix that before the broken contact form? Such a priority needs more justification than a red check mark.
What the file is intended for
The proposal at llmstxt.org describes a file through which site owners can provide information and references for language models. A curated starting point can be practical for extensive documentation: product information, essential guides and applicable conditions in one place.
That does not establish that a particular search or chat provider uses the file for every answer. A claimed visibility effect would need separate evidence.
What should come first
Linked pages need to be accessible, current and available for the intended request. An overview pointing to obsolete prices or blocked pages helps little. It does not replace robots.txt either; the files have different purposes.
If you maintain an llms.txt, treat it as another entry page. Assign responsibility for updates, check links after a redesign and keep product names and qualifications consistent.
Priorities depend on the use case. A small website with clear navigation has a different problem from an extensive developer documentation site. Resolve demonstrated access faults first. Add the file when its audience and maintenance are clear.
The llms.txt proposal explains the intended purpose and format. It is not evidence of universal adoption by AI search services.
