Why the same question can produce different answers
Tobias Raddatz
You ask the same provider question on two days. Your brand appears on Monday and is absent on Tuesday. Which answer is “right”? For visibility measurement, both are relevant observations.
Editorial note: An earlier version described an original test of five models with 100 queries each. No documented experimental dataset is available to support those claims. We have removed them.
Several factors may be involved
Text generation, changed context and different search results can all produce variation. A model update can change measurement conditions too. A different answer alone does not identify the cause.
A record is therefore more useful than a guess: exact question, time, provider, available model identifier, answer and sources. Record search mode and additional context as well.
What repeated observations can show
Several queries allow you to count how often a brand appears and how its positions are distributed. Those rates describe the panel examined. They are neither market share nor a complete representation of real user questions.
Review providers separately before combining results. An unchanged overall rate may conceal more mentions from one provider and fewer from another.
If the observations cannot support a decision, say so in the report. Another measurement is often more useful than an explanation that cannot be derived from the available answers.
