A competitor comparison needs the same questions
Vincent Sünderhauf
Your brand was tested on ten questions and a competitor on three. One test used web search and the other did not. Putting two percentages next to each other does not make the comparison fair.
Check conditions before results
Define the purchasing decisions the panel should represent. Use a shared question set, period and provider selection. Keep direct brand questions separate from open provider questions.
The competitive set follows from the offer and market. A national provider may be relevant to some questions, while a local specialist is more relevant to others. Make that decision before reviewing scores.
Different metrics answer different questions
Mention rate records how often a brand appears. Position records where it appears. Citation rate concerns links to a domain. Combining them requires an explicit calculation and an explanation of the resulting value.
Within a KI Score market, brands share the same question set. The market score applies to that defined comparison. Custom monitoring can explore specific subjects but does not change it.
Investigate the differences
A gap gives a reason to read more closely. Are competitors mentioned for different uses? Do sources differ? Are answers missing? Record specific findings before planning actions.
A benchmark is especially useful when it produces the next question to investigate. A ranking alone does not explain the cause.
